Funding secured to unlock housing in Cornwall

Cornwall Council has successfully bid for multi-million-pound funding from the government’s housing infrastructure fund.

The council has received £5.7m to unlock the redevelopment of Hayle Harbour North Quay by building road access to support the construction of a 580-home, mixed-use development.

Another £2.3m has been earmarked to regenerate 500 acres of former china clay land and develop a garden village in West Carclaze near St Austell.

The project will deliver 1,500 new homes as well as health and community facilities, a primary school, employment floorspace, leisure facilities and a country park.

Council cabinet member for homes Andrew Mitchell welcomed the funding.

“The highly competitive bidding process saw the government assess each project on its strategic ambition, benefit-to-cost ratio and deliverability, so the success of our bids shows confidence in the economic and housing strategies developed by the council to unlock housing development and boost economic growth in Cornwall,” said Cllr Mitchell.

“It is important that we help to deliver the quality housing that we need for Cornwall, which is set out in the Cornwall local plan.

“The council is committed to being instrumental in the delivery of 1,000 new homes over the next five years.”

Cornwall Council had previously led the delivery of early infrastructure with the Carluddon A391 road improvements and the technology park.

Bob Egerton, cabinet member for planning and economy at Cornwall Council, added: “This is very welcome news.

“As a council, we have ambitious plans to bring forward housing developments that have not been delivered by the private sector.

“This financial support from the government will enable us to deliver housing that the residents of Cornwall need.”
